My mother was born in Hampstead London on 5th February 1927.  During the war her paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Wickham had relocated from Worthing to lodge at Weaver’s Farm in Somerset with a Mr and Mrs Howes as they felt it was too dangerous on the South coast. My mother used to go and stay with them and enjoyed helping out on the farm, she had always been mad keen on horses and was in her element amongst the working horses. The Howes’s had two daughters Phyllis ( who is sometimes referred to as P) who worked alongside Mum and an elder daughter Stella.  When she was old enough (17) Mum decided work properly on the farm and to join the Women’s Land Army. I have copied her diaries month by month, below is April1944. The entries are sometimes accompanied by poems, song lyrics. There are also some cuttings from magazines and newspapers which have been put in the gallery along with several photos.

Thoughts…

“Build a little fence of trust around today

Fill the space with loving work and therein stay;

Look not through the sheltering bars upon to-morrow,

God will help thee bear what comes of joy of sorrow.

Love on through doubt and darkness; and believe

 there is no thing which love may not aleave.

“ Love is strong as death. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it”

“ I thank Thee Lord that thou hast made love to astound

That in the darkest spot on earth some love is found”
