Cut out wood most of the day. Knitted and read in the evening.
Got kale and hay in the morning. Mrs Howes helped cut kale while I went to Binegar Bottom, I helped when I got back. Took home a load of wood. Rushed and got finished just before 5, to catch the 5.17 train. It was 50 mins late. Peggy went on to Masbury, as she fell asleep! Saw two good films. Q Planes and “Murder By Night” caught the 9.30 train. It was not too bad. D. Selway has a white paper!
It rained hard most of the day. Finished my “daily dozen” by about 11.30. Went and fed calves. Mended and read till 3.15. Got cows. Milked. Went to church. It was very, very windy all day. Hazel’s hat blew off coming out of church and we spent 10 minutes chasing round graves. Dennis found it in the end.
Cut out wood all day. Went to Fry’s and Binegar Bottom after lunch. Got cows about 3.50. Went to dancing class. Had a jolly good time, only missed about 2 dances. My “boy friend” came in N.F.S. uniform and great hefty boots! Albert had a new suit!
Got kale and a load of wood before lunch. I had my afternoon off. |I went to the library and saw Miss Phillips, she is leaving and I have to take over the Guides! Gosh what a job. Miss Luton came so I had to miss a Y.F.C. meeting that caused a bust up. I am doing what I like after working hours! Had quite a quiet meeting for a change. Practised a carol. Told Mr Warren all my troubles! Walked down to the bus stop with Miss Philips. We are having a party next Tuesday, Oakhill guides are coming.
It rained off and on all day. Got kale with Mr H. P did not do anything except with in the way of work. Thinks I care! Cleaned hay house till lunch. Cut out wood till cow-time. Went to Whist Drive in
Poochie’s birthday, I sent him 2/6d. Cut kale with Mr H. Mrs H buzzed off as usual. It poured all the time and we both got soaked. Had to change boots, socks etc. We came in at 12.30 and did not go out again till 2.45 and then mr H and I sawed up a bit of wood. I took the bull out and got the cows. Went to Y.F.C.Social at Chewton. Had dancing, several good sketches and a good feed. I fell flat while dancing with Bill Wells. Bunny escorted me to the gate! Don’t sweetheart me etc..!!!!!
Our wireless is at last working. Got up before the news was over about 7.15. we got kale before lunch. I cut all the time then again while Mr Howes got a load of hay. It was bitterly cold and I really could not do any more by about 1.30. Came home with the load of hay and unloaded it. Roley came through the ford with his gun. Got another load of kale and then wood I went and saw Miss Philips and then brought the cows on. Mr H helped. Milked. Audrey Clarke came with her money. I went to the rectory at about 6.30 and got Grandma’s umbrella. Met Offy. He is a funny bloke, but - !!! Came back and wrote a week’s diary. Finished my second sock. I started my slippers.
Got hay and kale in the morning. Got Kale and a load of wood. I bought cows on. Offy did not appear! He was asked!?! I finished one slipper. Mr and Mrs Lambert came collecting for warren. Grandpa gave 2/6d and took it back when Grandma went upstairs for some! Did not go to bed until 11 after hearing “Music while you work” Curled my hair.
It rained, not unusual. I went to Jones and to feed the calves. I was talking to ewart for a bit. Knitted till 3.15. Got cows. Went to church. I went back in to rectory. I stayed to supper. Gosh talk about a row when I got back!
Monday 11th Decemebr 1944
Cut out wood all day. Went to dancing class. Albert asked if I was afraid of him when dancing. Had quite a few dances. It was cold coming home. Posted Air-graph to Frank.
Got kale and hay til 2. I had a hectic rush all afternoon. Went in school and saw Miss Philips, went on to P.O. and then on to hall and hid treasure hunt, went in the rectory and saw Mrs warren. Got to party at 5.30. Had a hectic time. Miss Tawith Mrs snook came and Mary Warren. Had game and dancing and tons to eat. Presented book voucher. Went down to Mrs Padfield’s with the key with Mrs Snook. We were discussing Miss Tawith, she came as far as the gate with me. P and Mrs Howes went to Litton to a whist drive.
Spent day cutting out wood. Went to a whist drive. I played a lot with Cyril Hockey as I was a gent.
Got two loads of kale and two loads of wood. Went down to calves and got cow. Went to Youth Club party. We heard Cyril Hockey was crushed to death in Edborough quarry. He leaves a wife and 4 children.
It was foggy and damp all day. Did my usual jobs and then went and helped grind the staff hook, reap hook and hatchet.I ached. Went down Binegar Bottom before lunch. Cut kale till nearly 3.45. Walked through cabbages. Milked finished my supper and wrote. Went to bed early.
Got a load of hay, this took us till 1.45. got two loads of kale. Spent reasonably quiet evening Mr Colotradie told me I had to leave guides.
Did all my jobs and fed the calves down Binegar Bottom. Cleaned some shoes. Helped unload some oats till 1. Changed into Guide uniform. Went to Carol Service at 2.30. met Hewart and offy on the green. Had out flag dedicated. I had to receive 4 flags, two guides and two scouts. Milked with my dungarees over my uniform. Went to church. Dennis is still here. Jim comes tomorrow and Hugh on Tues.
Mr Howes went to Farrington. Cleaned up a bit of yard and sorted a cut out in the home ground. Cut kale in plough-ground here and over rectory and cut a few cabbages till 1. Got in horse after lunch and hauled out the kale and cabbages and brought home a load of wood. I went to feed calves and get cows while P and Mr Howes got in some turnips. Went to Xmas Whist drive at Slade. There were tons of people there I did not know. Started with Laurie and John Killen. I got the booby! ½ doz eggs. P got 1 doz for the longest sitting. We bought a tonghue for £2.5/-
Cleaned turnips till 1 I had a hectic rush as it was 1.10 when I got in to catch the wells bus. Got my W.L.A. cards. I spent a hectic afternoon Xmas shopping. Saw Dennis and Joan warren. Got my dancing shoes. Went down rectory. Saw Jim. I disturbed angela. Hugh arrived just as I left. Wrote cards and knitted.
Got up fairly early for a change. It did not get light till late. I went over with the cows to put out hay, so I had to clean out after breakfast. Went to P.O. took knife to feed heifers. Cut a float load of cabbages P went to Wells at 11. Saw Jim in the wood cutting holly. Went up to the doctors. Cyril Hockey was buried today. Did pails. Collected turnips till 3.30. ground turnips and went and got cows. Washed my hair. Made up a parcel for home. Wrote my diary up. Knitted and read.
We got in the horse and put out the cabbages over the rectory and brought some home, had a chat with Dr Finn who came to see Grandma’s knee. Got a load of turnips after lunch. Mrs Warren brought me some sweets and Grandma some flowers for Xmas. P heard Mrs W say something about guides and she went for Grandma. She must have been listening. Went down Binegar Bottom. P did not arrive until I had milked three cows. They went to Chewton Whist drive. I had a pain.
It was dull and dreary all day. We had finished milking before it was light this morning. Put out hay for the cows. Someone has been at our holly again. Cleaned out and scrubbed the stall. Took bull out and cleaned up the yard. Cleaned turnips till lunch-time. Got in sheep and took out hay to cow. Ground Swedes. Went and got cows. I cleaned more yard. Milked. Penned up. Offy goes home tomorrow. George came. Went down Bown’s with Stella. Milly and John were there. Mr bown was very teasing.
Got up pretty late. Had to rush about and get down quickly as we had to find the calves as well as getting cabbages, turnips and hay. We got in about 2 for lunch. We had to get a load of turnips and load hay 3 times and get the bull in. Went to Shepton on the 6.30 bus. Saw “Stagecoach” There was a chatty policeman at the station. Got in about 11.
We were late, as per usual, on Sunday morning. Milked cleaned out. Went to calves. Cleaned my shoes and did some ironing. Had lunch. Mended and did a bit of writing. Got cows. Went to church. George and Jim were there. Saw Mrs Warren after church she was very affectionate. I am to go to supper on Boxing Night. Barbara Tucker and Dennis came in. Helped fill kids stockings.
Xmas day 1944 the war news is not good and it was terribly frosty and foggy all day. Did not do much beyond necessary jobs. Went to calves. Heard King’s speech at 3. Had an orange. Got cows. Saw george and Jim, their hair was frosted! Finished about 5. Did some of the fancy work on my vest. Plyed “
Got up at 7. It was a very heavy frost and the trees and hedges looked really lovely. Took cows over. Tiny and Blackie had a fight. I did the stall etc. put out turnips and cleaned some. Darned some stockings, and put some fastenings on my blue dress. Had lunch. Wrote and knitted till cow-time. Finished by 5. Got ready to go to rectory. Phoned Denny before I went. I have to meet him in
Wendy’s birthday today, she is 16. How we all grow up. Got up late. There was a terrific frost. We had to start a cut over rectory, we did not get in to breakfast until 10.30. The men came and felled 3 trees today. Cleaned out. Went down Binegar Bottom and fed calves and broke the ice. It was thawing fast. Put out turnips and cleaned some. P stayed in till 3.30 she had a cold. I took off thatch etc and broke some ice out in further ground. Got cows. Finished about 5.30. saw Hugh taking some bundles in a barrow to the station. Wrote and knitted. Ent to bed early. The water pipe burst and we did not have any water for a few hours.

We kept the cows at home today. Did stall. I went to Binegar Bottom, the calves were out so I was late, but the thresher had not arrived. We did not start till 11.30, I was on Bundles with Dennis all day. I had to work hard, but it was a lovely clear frosty day and it was nice working. Finished about 5. I did not arrive in time for milking finished about 5.30. Washed and changed before tea. Spent lazy evening.
It thawed very quickly today. I had to phone the vet to come and put nippy to “sleep” so I did not do much milking. P had to milk Ted’s heifer, she took an hour. Got horse in got a big load of hay before lunch. Got another after lunch. Went down Binegar Bottom and fed calves. Got load of turnips and 3 baskets of mangles. P went up Ted’s Mr H helped milk. Finished by 5.30. Did agricultural crossword.
Late as usual getting up. Did all our jobs I went to the calves. Saw Offy on the corner. Mended after lunch. I did not have to get the cows in as they were at home. Went to A stones before church as we are having the thresher tomorrow. It was cold in church. Went to supper at rectory. Mary is going to Blandford on Tues. Hugh has to go back to
